Soldiers Home building rehab among housing tax credit award winners

The restoration of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home into housing for veterans is among five Milwaukee projects that received state tax credits awards on Tuesday.

The affordable housing tax credits will help restore the Soldiers Home’s Old Main building into 80 apartments for veterans, and their families, who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The $1.4 million in tax credit financing is needed to finance the project, said Joseph Alexander, president of Madison-based Alexander Co., which partnered with the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee on the project. The building will not generate the same rent payments as market-rate housing, he said.
