We still need your help to return remaining vacant and endangered Soldiers Home buildings to the service of veterans.
For more than a decade, the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance (MPA) has been at the forefront of the Save the Soldiers Home effort. In 2016, the effort reached a critical milestone when work began to rehabilitate a number of the District's threatened historic buildings, including Old Main. MPA successfully raised funds and managed the $3 million “Every Hero Deserves a Home” capital campaign necessary to fill the project's financing gap, helping to make the restoration possible. Today these buildings provide needed housing for veterans and their families at risk of homelessness.
In October 2020, MPA announced an important step toward the rehabilitation and reuse of three additional buildings: The Chapel, Theater and Governor's Mansion. MPA launched a campaign to raise the funds necessary to leverage a matching grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and engage a Historic Preservation Consultant to develop economically feasible recommendations for the adaptive reuse of these buildings. MPA successfully raised the necessary funds and is working with the VA to review the findings of the feasibility report and determine next steps toward saving these threatened buildings.
Your financial support is critical to MPA's continued advocacy work to Save the Soldiers Home.
