TOGETHER, WE CAN SAVE THE SOLDIERS HOME

SAVING THE CHAPEL, THEATER & GOVERNOR'S MANSION - POSSIBILITIES ABOUND

We need your help to restore these remarkable buildings and return them to the service of veterans.

In October 2020, the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance (MPA) announced that it will be taking an important step toward the rehabilitation and reuse of the Chapel, Theater and Governor's Mansion by engaging a Historic Preservation Consultant to develop economically feasible recommendations for the adaptive reuse of these buildings.

We need your financial support to help us identify feasible ways to restore these remarkable buildings to the service of veterans. We have a $15,000 total goal, the first $5,000 of which will be matched dollar for dollar through a matching grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Money raised will go to the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance and will fund the work of the Historic Preservation Consultant as well as MPA's ongoing advocacy work focused on saving these three historic, vacant buildings.

EVERY HERO DESERVES A HOME | HOUSING FOR HOMELESS AND AT-RISK VETERANS

In 2017, a coalition of organizations and volunteers dedicated to saving the Soldiers Home launched a capital campaign to raise the private funds needed to restore six historic buildings in the Soldiers Home Historic District - including the iconic Old Main - to their original purpose - the service of veterans.

Partners in the campaign include the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Milwaukee Preservation Alliance, Center for Veterans Issues, and the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee.
Learn more about the project here.

The rehabilitation project is currently underway with plans to open in Spring 2021. While the financing for the project has closed, and work is underway, there are still ways the community can support the veterans who will call these buildings home.

Additional funds raised will go toward amenities for the rehabilitated buildings including finishes, furniture, and artwork that will help our nation’s heroes feel at home.
