Journal Sentinel: Soldiers Home Named National Landmark

Milwaukee’s National Soldiers Home, once a lifeline for veterans returning from war and today a gracious park-like area with both functional and dilapidated buildings, was named a national historic landmark Thursday.

“This is basically the highest level of recognition that a site can receive,” said Ali Kopyt, a board member with Milwaukee Preservation Alliance. “We’ve been waiting for this landmark status.”

The entire 90-acre site, including a soldiers’ cemetery, a chapel and a theater, was designated along with 13 other sites across the country as national landmarks by the National Park Service.
