THE SOLDIERS HOME TODAY

SOME OF THE DISTRICT'S KEY HISTORIC BUILDINGS REMAIN VACANT AND ENDANGERED.

Thanks in large part to an advocacy and awareness effort led by the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance (MPA), six historic Soldiers Home buildings – including the iconic Old Main - have been renovated into 101 supportive housing units for veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Veterans in need are once again receiving care and healing at the Soldiers Home, because every hero deserves a home.

After the successful restoration project for the first six buildings concluded, the MPA turned its sights to three remaining vacant Soldiers Home buildings that had fallen into disrepair: Ward Memorial Theater, The Governor's Mansion and the Soldiers Home Chapel.

Now, plans are in place to fully restore and reuse these three historic buildings, bringing them back to their original purpose - the service of veterans
