THE SOLDIERS HOME TODAY

SOME OF THE DISTRICT'S KEY HISTORIC BUILDINGS REMAIN VACANT AND ENDANGERED.

Thanks in large part to an advocacy and awareness effort led by the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance (MPA), six historic Soldiers Home buildings – including the iconic Old Main - have been renovated into 101 supportive housing units for veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Veterans in need are once again receiving care and healing at the Soldiers Home, because every hero deserves a home.

Though Veterans once again call Old Main home, other key historic buildings remain threatened. Ward Memorial Theater, The Governor’s Mansion and the Soldiers Home Chapel, for example, remain unused and deteriorating. MPA is encouraging the VA to pursue a request for proposal seeking a developer to rehabilitate these three notable, vacant historic buildings.
